God's Spirit at Work in the World

At this point you might expect some "Christian hymns and worship songs" to choose from and sing along to. Not today. The music and songs below are different: they don't belong to the domain of 'the church' but are well known by 'the world' (the songs on YouTube have had millions and millions of views!). Despite this, through varied genres, they communicate important truths - good news - about what God has done and what God is doing. This is God's Spirit at work in the world - with News for the World!

So, sit back and try to appreciate the music and songs - consider what the artists want to express through them. The 'style' of some of these may not be to your usual tastes, but stick with it! In an article about appreciating the worth of classical music in regard to faith, Jeremy Begbie says "It means suspending the question, “Do I like it?” and asking instead, “What’s going on here?”"

So, what's going on here? What's God saying to you through this artistry today?...

God's Spirit has always been and is still at work in the world. So, what's so special about the day of Pentecost?

Let's read and hear what happened...

 Bible Reading: Acts 2:1-12

Read by Paul Simon

When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.

Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken. Utterly amazed, they asked: ‘Aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans? Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language? Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs – we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!’ Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, ‘What does this mean?’
